40 DAYS OF PRAYER
40 Days of Prayer is a prayer initiative that will deepen and strengthen the prayer lives of the Discovery Church Body. The purpose is to build up the community of Jesus followers who are growing in prayer and committed to becoming a prayer-devoted church.
The first church in Jerusalem, planted by Jesus’ disciples, was a prayer-devoted church. Three times in Acts Luke uses the intense Greek word proskartere—a word that literally means “to occupy oneself diligently to something”—to describe the strength of their commitment to prayer. When you see the word devote in Acts, it is often associated with prayer (Acts 1:14; 2:42; 6:4).
The Apostle Paul uses the same word when he talks about prayer. He exhorts Jesus’ followers to be devoted to prayer (Colossians 4:2; Romans 12:12; Ephesians 6:18). Devotion to prayer was the norm, not the exception, for the New Testament church.
40 Days of Prayer will help you move toward becoming a prayer-devoted follower of Jesus. An important part of this process is being a member of a small group. Small groups will meet during these 40 days to give instruction, mutual support, and practical suggestions in becoming a prayer devoted person.
